EOS 5D Out of Stock! Replacement around the corner?
Posted on June 15, 2007 by Mark
After yesterday’s post about the EOS 5D Mark II, it’s interesting to find that nearly every camera shop near me is out of stock of the original EOS 5D. The only places I’ve found it in are two branches of Jessops, and they are horrendously over priced — about £200 more than I hope to get one for on Saturday.
In fact, when I spoke to someone at Jessops, they told me that the camera was coming up as ‘discontinued’. Could it really be that the Mark II is here?!

I just think there a lot of demand for it at the moment especially with the dropping price. It’s very tempting to grab one right now equipped with an L lens.
There’s too much of them here in the USA from official retailers.
But if the MK II was finally released that would be some nice news indeed.
To be honest I’d rather they didn’t replace it now that I’ve just got one!
I heard that the reason Jessops say it as discontinued is because they are having some financial problems at the moment, and Canon have probably stopped giving them any form of credit…
Well, Mark, enjoy your 5D. I’ve always wanted to get one now that my Leica is going in for skin replacement. Those aluminum bodies are kinda delicate.
Let us know how you like the camera.
Thanks
It’s a bit too early to give a proper opinion on the 5D, but it’s almost exactly the same as my 20D. That is to say with one exception: a direct print button. A dedicated direct print button! I’d love to know how many people have ever used that button; I mean, I don’t even think you can use it with RAWs! Why on earth did they put one there? Why not give us something useful like a mirror lock up button or a flash sync speed selector? I really don’t understand it….
But so far the 5D seems good. The images are very nice (and big!), and it’s identical to my 20D in terms of buttons, menu options and so on.
See my post in the 5D replacement speculation. Camera stores over here in America are prepping, as I discussed with a camera store owner, for the replacement due out in the fall.
Well I’ve been using my 5D for a few months now, and I have to say it’s great! Whenever I pick up my 20D it feels like a toy — small viewfinder, small LCD, and slightly smaller body. Hehhe, it was definitely a good buy
There has been absolutely loads of speculation on the camera that will replace the 5D, dubbed the 5D Mk II, but so far there has been no concrete news from Canon….
