Canon EOS-1D Mark III Announced
Posted on February 23, 2007 by Mark
Pre-PMA 2007, Canon have made their first big announcement for the year: an update to the EOS 1D. The EOS 1D Mark III features a ten megapixel APS-H (1.3x FOV crop) CMOS sensor, and can take an impressive ten frames per second. It’s also got an updated DIGIC III image processor, a new 19 area Auto Focus system, and is sensitive up to ISO 6400!
A rather interesting new feature is that the 3.0″ LCD monitor has a live view feature. This is a feature becoming more popular with some of the prosumer digital SLRs, but a first for such a high end camera. Personally, I think it’s a bit of a shame that Canon have added this feature - does it herald the end of the viewfinder altogether?
It’s going to be interesting to see what other great new cameras are announced at PMA this year. The last 12 months has probably been the most important since the release of the Canon 300D back in 2003. Nikon have released some excellent and very affordable DSLRs in the shape Nikon D40 and the Nikon D80, and although I’m a big Canon fan, I feel they have slipped behind Nikon a little bit at this end of the market.
Time will tell…
